The SMG I? Hated even more than the SMG II in the E46s. On the E46 at least you can convert it to three-pedals, I don't know about the E36s. I imagine it to be a similar conversion.

That it is to be avoided.

The one time I drove an SMG E46 I didn't like it at all, but a friend who I trust told me that the dealership must have "had it set up wrong" as there is a way to tune the delay between the shifts so there is much less of a delay. It couldn't have been all bad if the CSL was SMG only (albeit with some different programming.)

There are a million settings (S1-6) that control the speed of the shifts. You can also get the control unit flashed to CSL parameters which helps as well. That's of course for the E46, not sure on the E36.

Everyone with the SMG wishes they'd gotten the three pedal setup instead. That's all I know.

In the US it was just a straight up automatic.
